The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) and representatives of the Liberian Government were part of the 34th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, held in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 28 to October 31, 2024, with the Red Cross calling for increased support to strengthen humanitarian response in Liberia.
The conference was organized by the Standing Commission of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement as a key forum for addressing humanitarian issues worldwide with representatives of governments, donor institutions, institutions of learning as well as the financial community.
This year’s theme, “Navigate Uncertainty – Strengthen Humanity,” reflects the urgency of fostering stronger humanitarian systems to address escalating global crises and strengthen resilience within vulnerable communities, including those in Liberia.

Liberia’s delegation includes prominent representatives from both the Liberian Government and the Liberia National Red Cross Society. The four-member team comprises Mr. Paul W. Tate, Head of Mission of the Liberian Permanent Mission in Geneva; Assistant Minister Karishma Pelham-Raad, who leads the government delegation; Mr. Jerome N. J. Clarke, II, National President of the Liberia National Red Cross; and Mr. Gregory T. Blamoh, Secretary General of the Liberia National Red Cross Society.
“This international conference is an essential platform for dialogue on how we can collectively enhance humanitarian efforts, protect beneficiaries as well as humanitarian workers especially as crises grow in scale and complexity. For Liberia, this is an opportunity to share our experiences, learn from others, and secure more support to bolster our humanitarian response,” said Mr. Gregory T. Blamoh, Secretary General of the LNRCS has said.
The conference’s theme emphasizes the global commitment to adapting and strengthening humanitarian responses amid rising uncertainty. “The theme, ‘Navigate Uncertainty – Strengthen Humanity,’ could not be more fitting,” remarked Secretary General Blamoh.
Mr. Blamoh added: “It underlines the need for collective resilience and preparedness in humanitarian work. At a time when global events are increasingly unpredictable, our focus must be on unity, collaboration, preparedness and ensuring that humanitarian principles guide our actions.”
With Liberia facing its own unique challenges, including natural disasters, economic vulnerabilities, and public health issues, the conference presents an invaluable opportunity for the Liberian Red Cross to engage in high-level discussions that can shape policies and secure resources for effective response.
“We return home from this conference more determined to support vulnerable communities, enhance our response capacity, and work alongside partners to meet urgent needs in times of crisis”, the Red Cross Secretary General Added.

Meanwhile the Government of Liberia has renewed its commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts and upholding the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement at the 34th International Conference of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent (ICRC) in Geneva.
Delivering a statement on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Liberia’s Assistant Minister for International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Karishma Pelham-Raad, underscored Liberia’s dedication to the humanitarian values of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and voluntary service.
In her address, Pelham-Raad described the conference as “a beacon of hope and unity,” noting the essential role of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in a world beset by conflicts, disasters, and crises, particularly referencing the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East. She emphasized that in such challenging times, countries have a shared responsibility to promote international humanitarian law, protect human dignity, and address the needs of the most vulnerable populations.
“Liberia reaffirms its unwavering support for the core principles and objectives of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement,” Pelham-Raad stated. She highlighted Liberia’s collaborative efforts with the movement in providing lifesaving assistance, reuniting families separated by crises, and promoting disaster preparedness. These actions, she said, reflect Liberia’s commitment to alleviating human suffering and fostering a culture of peace and resilience.
