In a significant boost to emergency response capabilities, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has generously donated a variety of assorted essential materials to the Liberia National Red Cross Society. This donation, comprising thermal blankets, sleeping mats, heavy-duty plastic buckets, laundry soap, plastic tarpaulins, hand gloves, mosquito nets, solar lamps, and dry-erase boards, aims to empower the Liberian Red Cross in effectively addressing humanitarian needs in affected communities.
The donated items are crucial in meeting the needs of vulnerable communities and responding to disaster situations to alleviate the suffering of those affected.
A presentation ceremony marked the official handover of the materials, where UNHCR Country Representative Antony Akumu Abogi commended the Liberia National Red Cross Society as the country’s emergency face.
He emphasized that the donation is intended to bolster the Red Cross, particularly in areas affected by disasters. Mr. Abogi highlighted the recent Totota tragedy, expressing condolences for the lives lost and injuries sustained, and noted that some of the donated materials could aid the victims’ families.

Acknowledging the warm reception of refugees by the people of Liberia, Mr. Akumu Abogi underscored the collaborative efforts between the UNHCR and the Liberian Red Cross as essential in addressing the humanitarian needs of the Liberian people.
In response, LNRCS Secretary General Gregory T. Blamoh expressed heartfelt gratitude to the UNHCR for their timely and perfect intervention. Mr. Blamoh highlighted the long-standing collaboration between the Liberian Red Cross and the UNHCR, emphasizing the critical importance of the donated materials.
At present, the Red Cross is actively intervening in the recent tragedy in Bong County, providing support to affected families and hospitals. Surgical gowns, donated to hospitals treating victims, showcase the ongoing commitment of both organizations to alleviate the suffering of those affected by emergencies.

Mr. Blamoh stressed the critical need for additional support to respond to the increasing complexity of humanitarian needs in communities, calling on individuals and organizations to join hands in making a lasting impact on the lives of those facing challenging times.
