Health & Wellbeing
The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) Health and Care Program is a cornerstone initiative aimed at improving the health, dignity, and resilience of communities across Liberia. Aligned with national health priorities and rooted in community-based approaches, the program addresses a broad spectrum of public health needs through prevention, preparedness, and response strategies.
Community-Based Health
At its core, the Health and Care Program is dedicated to promoting community health and well-being through a holistic, life-course approach. The program provides first aid training, implements disease prevention campaigns, supports maternal and child health, and responds swiftly to emergency health situations. In partnership with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders, the LNRCS ensures that vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations have access to essential, affordable, and appropriate health services.
Water, Sanitation & Hygiene
Recognizing that health is influenced by environmental and behavioral factors, the LNRCS places strong emphasis on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH). The program improves access to safe drinking water and sanitation infrastructure, while also promoting hygiene education to reduce the incidence of waterborne and communicable diseases. Community-based WASH committees and school health clubs are established and trained to sustain healthy practices and facilities.
Epidemic Preparedness And Response
One of the program’s key pillars is epidemic preparedness and response. The LNRCS plays an active role in Liberia’s public health emergency coordination mechanisms. The Health and Care Program contributes to the establishment of community-based surveillance systems, enhances event-based detection, and supports rapid response to outbreaks of communicable diseases. Through mass awareness campaigns, mobile health outreach, and community engagement, the program mitigates the impact of epidemics such as COVID-19, Ebola, and other infectious diseases.
Mobile Health Services
LNRCS is also expanding Mobile Health services, which bring critical healthcare to remote and underserved areas. Health workers are trained in mobile health delivery, and mobile clinics are launched to reach communities that lack access to permanent health facilities. These services cover general health care, epidemic prevention, maternal and child health, and psychosocial support.
Mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS)
Mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) is another vital component of the program. The LNRCS empowers communities—especially youth—to confront and manage mental health challenges. Through behavior change communication, focus group discussions, and community dialogue, the program promotes emotional resilience and addresses stigma around mental health issues. Volunteers and staff are also supported with mental health resources to ensure their well-being and effectiveness in service delivery.
The program’s approach is grounded in community engagement, accountability, and locally led solutions. By actively involving communities in identifying health needs and designing responses, the LNRCS fosters ownership and sustainability. Health and hygiene committees, school clubs, and chapter coordinators are trained to implement and monitor health interventions, ensuring a lasting impact.
In summary, the LNRCS Health and Care Program is a dynamic, inclusive, and impactful initiative that:
Through this comprehensive approach, the Liberia National Red Cross Society continues to play a pivotal role in building healthier, safer, and more resilient communities throughout Liberia.
THE LNRCS CLINIC
The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) operates a community-focused clinic at its headquarters in Monrovia, serving as a vital health service hub for vulnerable populations. The clinic primarily targets pregnant women, lactating mothers, children under five, and individuals with special health needs, offering accessible and affordable care to those often marginalized in the health system. It delivers comprehensive maternal and child health services, including prenatal and postnatal care, routine vaccinations, safe deliveries, and ambulance support to ensure timely referrals and emergency response.
Equipped with essential diagnostic and medical tools, the clinic provides laboratory testing, ultrasound imaging, and treatment for a variety of health conditions. It serves as a frontline facility in supporting community health and reducing maternal and infant mortality. The LNRCS clinic also plays a crucial role in health promotion and disease prevention, aligning with national public health goals while reinforcing the organization’s commitment to improving healthcare access for the most at-risk groups in Monrovia and surrounding areas.
The LNRCS clinic on Lynch Street already serves densely populated slum communities. If we get funding, our plan is to establish additional health posts in remote areas as well as mobile clinics to extend our reach even further, complemented by a referral system that ensures critically ill patients receive advanced care in partnership with County Health Teams.
