RED CROSS PROVIDES RELIEF TO FAMILIES AFFECTED BY MULTIPLE HAZARDS IN ROBERTSPORT

September 14, 2023

The Liberia National Red Cross Society has completed the distribution of assorted relief materials to at least 21 families in Robertsport who were badly affected by multiple hazards. The relief packages, generously provided by the Liberian Red Cross and the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), included essential items such as rice, cooking pots, sleeping mats, tarpaulins, buckets, blankets, and a collection of much-needed used clothes.

The Red Cross also supported six individuals with special cases including pregnant women to ensure their specific needs were addressed during this critical time in Kru Town, a fishing community recently hit by sea erosion and flooding following days of heavy downpours.

The heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding have caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure in communities in Grand Cape Mount, Bong, and Montserrado, displacing residents and leaving them in urgent need of support.

While relief efforts have already begun, the Red Cross continues to assess the full extent of the flooding’s impact on communities in Bong County. “Our teams are on the ground, conducting further assessments to accurately determine the immediate and long-term needs of the affected areas”, the Liberian Red Cross Secretary General Gregory Blamoh has said.

However, due to limited stocks of supplies to address the “extremely devastating” impact of the flooding, the Liberian Red Cross has recently launched a local appeal for 20 thousand USD to support communities to recover quickly and build resilience against future disasters.

“We are grateful to the National Disaster Management Agency for their support. Together, we can make a difference”, the Liberian Red Cross Secretary General Gregory T. Blamoh said in the release. He added: “We call on everyone to join us in this effort. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by these hazards”.

The latest relief intervention shows the Red Cross’ unwavering commitment to supporting vulnerable communities in times of need.

Meanwhile, Bea Mountain Mining Company generously donated essential supplies including rice, mineral water, vegetable oil, blankets, medical supplies, chocolate, liquid soap, and chicken to the affected community. The Red Cross was also commended for its transparent distribution of these items.
