In a significant initiative to enhance workplace safety and emergency response capabilities, the Liberia National Red Cross Society recently concluded a comprehensive training program for 72 individuals, comprising 21 females and 51 males. Conducted between January and March 2024, the training sessions were hosted in collaboration with esteemed institutions such as the Embassy of Germany, The Liberia Electricity Corporation, and SGS Liberia.
Out of the number of trained first Aiders, eight SGS Liberia staff were trained in Occupational First Aid in January, and in February, 50 staff of the Liberia Electricity Corporation attended the two-day Occupational and AED First Aid Training with the Liberian Red Cross Workplace First Aid Business team. The Embassy of Germany has also sponsored the training of 14 of its staff in Occupational First Aid and AED in March 2024.
The training curriculum encompassed essential aspects of Occupational First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) procedures, equipping participants with crucial skills and knowledge to effectively handle emergencies. Not only did the program aim to foster a secure work environment, but it also sought to generate funds to bolster the LNRCS humanitarian efforts.
The LNRCS Workplace First Aid Business Coordinator Marcus Washington said: “Our aim is twofold – to promote a safe work environment and to raise funds to support the humanitarian response efforts of the Liberian Red Cross. By empowering individuals with the necessary first aid skills, we do not only enhance workplace safety but also contribute to the broader mission of saving lives and alleviating human suffering.”
The intensive training allowed the participants to delve into theoretical concepts and engage in practical demonstrations, gaining hands-on experience in providing critical care during emergencies. The training not only expanded their knowledge base but also instilled confidence, empowering them to identify and mitigate safety hazards in workplaces, homes, and communities.
The lead training facilitator Musu Dwalu, underscored the importance of the training and emphasized its impact, stating, “This training goes beyond acquiring skills; it instills a sense of responsibility and preparedness in individuals, enabling them to be proactive in safeguarding lives and promoting a culture of safety in their surroundings.”

Armed with fundamental first aid skills, techniques, and knowledge, the participants are now better equipped to respond promptly to a wide array of emergencies, ensuring timely and effective interventions. The Liberia National Red Cross Society’s commitment to empowering individuals with life-saving skills reflects its dedication to fostering resilience and well-being within the community.
One of the trained first aiders from the LEC has expressed his gratitude to the Red Cross Workplace First Aid Business for the training, stating, “This program has been incredibly valuable. Not only have we acquired new skills and knowledge, but we also feel much more confident in our ability to respond effectively to emergencies, both at work and in our communities.”
The Liberian Red Cross Workplace First Aid training program is an ongoing initiative targeting various institutions to promote safety at work and foster a culture of preparedness for a safer and more secure work environment for all.
