GOL ISSUES PROCLAMATION; AS LNRCS CELEBRATES MAY MONTH 2021

May 10, 2021

The Government of Liberia has issued a proclamation declaring the Month of May as Red Cross Red Crescent Month during which the Liberian Red Cross is expected to demonstrate exceptional humanitarian actions across the country after its official celebration slated on May 8, 2021.

More than 190 countries around the world including Liberia will commemorates the birth anniversary of the founder of Red Cross Red Crescent Henry Dunant throughout the month of May and demonstrate humanitarian actions in communities, offering hope and support to needy communities and people.

The Head of State Dr. George Manneh Weah who is also the Chief Patron of the Liberian Red Cross has requested and called upon everyone and institution in Liberia to observe the Red Cross Month and fully participate in activities organized by the Red Cross to make the occasion more meaningful and rewarding.

The Liberian Red Cross and partners have already organized activities including free blood pressure monitoring and sugar testing, awareness raising, donation to vulnerable homes and communities and strengthening Red Cross School clubs for health and hygiene promotion in schools. Other activities include community clean-up campaign and recruitment of new members including professional, Corporate, Honorary and Patron memberships to support the humanitarian works of the Liberian Red Cross.

The Government in its proclamation released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that these humanitarian services of the Red Cross have meant so much to many people in the country and therefore it was pleased this month to renew its sense of common purpose and honor all those whose sacrifices have made the Liberian society more prepared, resilient, and united to address vulnerabilities across the country.

According to the Government proclamation the Red Cross has and continue to render relevant and timely services to distressed and needy people in time of disasters and looking beyond at other compelling humanitarian challenges and adopting ways of addressing needs in communities.

The Red Cross Red Crescent Movement will commemorate this year May Month under the theme:  #Unstoppable | #Inarretable | #Imparable. Since 2020, one in every 12 people around the world received some form of help from the Red Cross or Red Crescent – from in-person psychosocial support to seeing a social post with COVID-19 information. The determination of the network to make sure communities have the knowledge and means to protect themselves has been truly unparalleled and the Red Cross Red Crescent staff and volunteers are unstoppable.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is there for everyone; with neutrality and impartiality, it offers hope and support, thus acts as a force for positive change in communities when it is needed the most, and is present everywhere, providing support to the most vulnerable in all contexts from large scale disasters, challenging conflict situations, to remote and hard to reach areas where no other aid organizations have access to.
