The recent surge in fire outbreaks within Monrovia and its environs has cast a somber shadow over the community, claiming lives and leaving properties charred and destroyed. In the wake of yet another tragic incident, the Liberian Red Cross stands as a beacon of hope, providing support and solace to those affected by the devastating flames.
In a heart-wrenching incident on February 20, 2024, five individuals, including two adults and three children, tragically lost their lives in a fire outbreak that engulfed three apartments in the Duport Road community. The loss of lives and property damage has left the community reeling in grief and despair.
Expressing condolences to the bereaved families and all those impacted by the tragic incident, Mr. Gregory T. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”

The Red Cross swiftly responded to the crisis by providing dignified burials for the victims and offering psychosocial support to those grappling with the emotional aftermath of the tragedy. As the frequency of fire outbreaks continues to rise, the Red Cross has been on the frontline, collaborating with partners such as the Ministry of Health, the National Disaster Management Agency, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs to provide assistance and support to affected communities.
The increasing number of fire incidents has exacerbated vulnerabilities and heightened the demand for humanitarian assistance to alleviate human suffering. Over 58 heartfelt letters requesting assistance poured into the Liberian Red Cross from affected families and communities, highlighting the profound impact of the fires on their lives.
Mr. Blamoh emphasized the critical importance of solidarity in times of crisis, stating, “The impact of the fire on these families has been profound, leaving them without the basic necessities of life. In times of crisis, we must come together to support those in need.”
The LNRCS response efforts include the distribution of essential items such as rice, cooking pots, buckets, mats, blankets, zinc sheets, soap, slippers, mosquito nets, and vegetable oil. These provisions aim to address both immediate and long-term needs, offering a lifeline to those grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.

The generous support of partners such as the Swedish Red Cross and the UNHCR has been instrumental in enabling the LNRCS to extend its reach and provide essential relief to those most in need. Expressing gratitude for the support received, Mr. Blamoh added, “We are immensely grateful to the Swedish Red Cross and the UNHCR for their invaluable support. Their assistance allows us to extend our reach and provide essential relief to those who need it the most.”
Despite limited resources, the Liberian Red Cross remains committed to prioritizing the most urgent requirements of those affected by fires and other disasters. As the community navigates through these challenging times, Mr. Blamoh reassured the public of the Red Cross’s steadfast commitment to serving the vulnerable, emphasizing that together, they can make a lasting impact on the lives of those affected.
